Drake Opportunities for Gaining Skills in Healthcare

BullD.O.G.S. in Healthcare is a program that will introduces you to careers in the health professions by educating you about opportunities in health sciences and inspiring you to explore different pathways.  You will participate in hands-on laboratory experiences, educational sessions, and interactive discussions with students and faculty in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to understand how to best prepare for a career in healthcare.  Special emphasis is placed on promoting careers in athletic training, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy and many others.  The overarching goal of this program is to expose you to a wide variety of opportunities within healthcare and educate you about how you can best prepare for a career in the health professions.

Program Goals

• You will learn about careers in the health professions.
• You will learn about promoting cultural competence and diversity in healthcare and among health professionals. 
• You will learn about the importance of practical lab experiences and begin to develop laboratory skills. 
• You will investigate the role of healthcare professionals to gain a better understanding of patient-provider relationships through skill-building exercises.  
• You will be able to plan your remaining high school curriculum and extracurricular activities to prepare for a career in healthcare.

2025 BullD.O.G.S. in Healthcare Overnight Experience

• Dates: Thursday-Saturday, July 10-12, 2025
• Location: Drake University
• Cost: $200.00 (financial assistance may be available for students who qualify)

Our in-person event includes staying overnight in an on-campus residence hall for two nights, as well as a number of activities that will help you learn about preparing for a career in the health professions.  Our sessions will include:

• Career options in healthcare
• Individual breakout sessions focused on Athletic Training, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy and Health Sciences
• Lab activities in various areas of health professions
• Interaction with current students and faculty
• Off-campus field trip to a local health organization
• College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences programs at Drake
• Preparing for college admission
• Entertainment on campus
• Staying overnight in an on-campus residence hall for 2 nights
• Meals on campus

Due to the costs involved in providing an overnight experience on campus, there is a $200.00 fee for participating.  Financial assistance may be available to students who qualify.

Participant Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements in order to participate:

• Enrolled as a 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grader during the 2025/2026 academic year, or you must have graduated from high school in 2024 or 2025
• Have an interest in careers in healthcare, math and/or science fields

Registration Deadline

Registration for this event will close on Monday, June 2, 2025 at 12:00 PM (Noon) CDT.  Payments will be accepted for this program until Monday, June 2, 2025 at 11:59 PM CDT.  Participants who have not paid the registration fee by this date will forfeit their spot in the program.  Refunds will not be granted for cancellations made after June 2, 2025.
